Nepal witnesses 73 percent voter turnout in 3rd phase of local polls

Nepal, also former Prime Minister, said that since the province no 2's election was capable of influencing the elections to the House of Representatives and State Assemblies, the result of the recently held election would help UML formulate strategy in view of these elections.

"There were some attempts to vote from other name but the active initiation of the Election Commissioner and Security bodies foiled the attempts and caught all the intruders who are set to get the punishment".

A total of 37,236 candidates are in the fray, the election commission said.

After the successful commencement of the local polls, Nepal is scheduled to hold the election of Province and House of representative in two phases in November and December.

The first and second phase election witnessed an turnover of 73 and 74 percent covering 615 local levels. The Madhes-centric parties, however, opposed the polls arguing that the Constitution should be amended to prior to the elections.

The polls were held in provinces 3, 4 and 6 on May 14 and in provinces 1, 5 and 7 on June 28.

She hoped that the provincial and parliamentary elections later this year will be a great achievement for the country's prolonged transition that began in 2008 after the country became federal republic after abolishing the 240-year monarchy. As per the new constitution it is necessary to complete, local, province and parliament elections by January 21 next year. A constitution amendment bill brought by the government was rejected by parliament in August as it could not garner a two-thirds majority.

The local polls are part of the final step in the peace deal that ended a 10-year civil war in 2006, and paved the way for provincial and general elections later this year.
